A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The president announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised ongoing apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an immediate suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
