'Sweet game'
Mary Prior KC, handling the case, detailed Ruben's offending to the court.
She explained his those affected were children from difficult backgrounds who were staying at a summer program which he operated.
The defendant conducted a "candy game" with the children, the legal counsel said, in which he would go into the sleeping quarters when they were preparing to sleep and tell them to ingest treats "as quickly as they can".
She stated to the judge the man had played this game with the boys "over an extended period", and children had earlier experienced illness the following morning.
She stated the defendant had been able to explain this repeatedly as the youngsters being "overexcited from fun", until his stepson had worries in summer 2025.
Mrs Prior KC stated further: "In the summer" his stepson had suspicions about what was going on, justifiably.
"They decided to investigate in the defendant's belongings."
The prosecutor stated objects including lubricant, ointment and syringes were found, and his stepson alerted the police about his concerns.
She said the man proceeded to play the "treat game" with six youngsters that time - Saturday 26 July - and they were everyone unwell the next day.
"The police had not gone out by that stage," she stated further.
The police watchdog, the police conduct office, previously told that it was investigating Leicestershire Police's handling of the events.
Mrs Prior stated the children were struggling to walk due to their sickness, so the stepson called the police once more.
She said the defendant then engaged in the "treat game" in a area of five youngsters.
