Seven alleged individuals of Germany's left-wing extremist organization face trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the network was responsible for targeting sites in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the US decision and urged the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
