Trump's Progressive Warning Misses The Continent's True Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed view of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" policies represent an existential threat to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The actual danger facing the EU is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Divide Separating Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere 13.5% growth for the European Union. Over this time, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Today, about 50% of the global 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Question

This widening economic gap stems from superior productivity growth in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology leadership is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at over $10bn, versus just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is the EU positioned? Experts widely concede it is largely a two-horse race between the United States and China, with European nations starting at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a true capital markets union, which caps the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder European business. A US startup can launch a service under one regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population size, is split among twenty-seven different national systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to propose serious reform. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, these assets could support much higher levels of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent education systems, and premier labs. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations could trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly increase economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
